Hair Mask vs Conditioner – what is the difference?
Hair Masks and Conditioners should both be a part of your regular hair care routine. But why – what is the difference between the 2?
Essentially, Hair Conditioner will seal the cuticles of your hair after shampooing, ensuring a nice smooth finish to your hair. If you have medium to long hair, it should be used after every wash, as not only will it seal your cuticles, it helps restore the pH balance of your hair as well. Make sure you use a conditioner suitable for your hair type, and only on the mid lengths and ends, using conditioner close to your scalp can lead to greasiness and lank hair.
A Hair Mask on the other hand, acts as a deep treatment, and deeply nourishes and helps repair your hair. In Australia, with out harsher climate, a hair mask is a must. The results of a mask tend to last longer than a conditioner, however they are generally heavier in formula, and do not need to be used after every wash. Most hair masks recommend you use them 2-3 times a week, which is plenty for nourishing and caring for your hair with a richer mask, however some are lighter weight, and able to be used after every wash (look at the usage instructions on a particular mask if you are not sure). Hair Masks tend to treat a specific need in your hair, such as nourishing coloured hair, repairing damaged hair etc. Look for a mask that suits the needs of your hair. Some good ones to try are:
