The Best Hand Creams and Lip Balms for Winter

Our hands and lips tend to suffer from dryness, dehydration, and damage more than any other body part over Winter. To understand why, we spoke with Nivea Skincare Expert Robyn Hutch. This is what she had to say:

Why do we need to take extra care of our hands over Winter? Why does our skin dry out so much more?

During Winter, cold and dry air tends to strip the skin of its natural protective oils and moisture, which can take a toll on your hands. Therefore, to avoid skin irritation and discomfort it is important to take action to protect your hands and provide relief during the cold months. Moisturising daily is key and I recommend using fast absorbing hand creams with ingredients like Vitamin C, as it helps to improve the moisture levels of your skin.

Why do we need to moisturise our lips regularly? What causes our lips to dry out so much more than the rest of our skin?

Our lips are more prone to drying out than any other part of our bodies due to two main things. The skin protecting our lips is much thinner than anywhere else and our lips don’t have pores, meaning no sweat or oil glands to keep them hydrated. Cracked and chapped lips can be caused by cold, dry air in Winter, lip licking and allergies to certain ingredients in toothpaste or lipstick.

Thank you Robyn – this certainly helps. Which Hand Cream and Lip products do we recommend? Read on below, to see our top 3 picks for each.

Carmex Classic Moisturising Lip Balms

Carmex have been keeping lips hydrated for a long time – since 1937 in fact. We’ve long been a fan of the Carmex Classic Squeeze Tube (also available in a portable pot) – the ultimate on-the-go lip balm savior, which is Australia’s top selling dedicated lip balm in pharmacies. Moisture is locked in using ingredients such as cocoa butter, beeswax and lanolin, and with over 145 sold every minute around the world, you know it works. We’re now making Carmex part of our daily Liptual, and saying goodbye to dry, chapped lips this Winter with the limited edition Watermelon pot – still with the same soothing and hydrating properties as the Classic, and with a gorgeous Summery Watermelon scent and flavor (and the all important SPF 15). Squeeze Tube 10g RRP $5.99. Pots 7.5g RRP $5.99.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant

This caring beauty, beloved by Beauty Experts around the world, has been around for a while – since 1930, when it was developed by Elizabeth Arden herself. Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant became an instant and overwhelming success (and has spawned many “sister” Eight Hour products), due to its ability to treat chafing, scrapes, and minor burns (hence its brilliance as a Lip Balm), and even, so the story goes, a loyal client’s child’s skinned knee in just eight hours. Ms Arden was also known to use the cream on her prized thoroughbred horse’s legs. Multi purpose (we love it as a cuticle cream too), and efficacious, this is a Lip Balm that will be around for a while to come. 50ml RRP $28.00.
