Serums vs Creams – what is the difference?

There are so many facial creams (or moisturisers), and serums on the market that make very similar claims, that it can get a bit confusing as to what they do. So, is there a difference between moisturisers and serums? In a nutshell, yes – they differ in their purpose, and the results they can deliver to your skin.

The main purpose of a Moisturiser is as the name suggests, to hydrate your skin. Some have additional benefits, such as SPF (always a good idea in a day cream in Australia), brightening benefits etc.

The main purpose of a Serum is to repair, or prevent damage occuring. They target a specific skin concern, ie lines, wrinkles, sagging, pigmentation (or sometimes multiple concerns), and have a richer mix of key ingredients that are far more effective in treating specific concerns that moisturizer. Serums also tend to be lighter weight than a moisturiser, so can penetrate deeper into the skin.

So, do you need both? Depending on your skin concern, the answer may be yes. If your skin just needs hydration, and perhaps minor help with a concern such as wrinkles, then a moisturiser will be sufficient, however to prevent damage, or once damage is evident, adding a serum to your regime (to be used before moisturiser) is a must. We tend to find, due to the climate in Australia, our skin ages at a faster rate, so a serum is a good idea.
