Skin After Menopause
As with the post on menopausal skin, how your skin behaves after menopause is also quite individual. You may find that some of the changes that did not occur in menopause are occurring now, and some may not occur at all. Below are the more typical changes you may notice.
One of the major changes you will notice post-menopause is just how dry your skin is, and the climate we have in Australia will not help this. As estrogen production really tapers off, skin becomes very dry and itchy. To combat this, drink lots (and lots) of water. Restrict hot showers, and look for a heavier duty cream for face and body. You may find yourself having to re-apply more than once a day. Applying both face and body moisturisers soon after a bath or shower can help improve hydration. Make sure you moisturise around the jawline, neck and décolletage, as skin in these areas is often neglected.
Sagging and wrinkling of the skin will unfortunately continue over time. Look for a skincare regime that targets sagging and wrinkling, and continue to use intensely. You may need to look for a more hydrating version as your skin dries out, and may need to up the ante with a serum if you are not already using one. As with menopausal skin, protection from the sun is very important. As the skin’s natural defences decline, skin is more prone to burning than ever. Continue to wear sunscreen (SPF 30+ or above) and protective clothing every day. If you are out and about, remember to re-apply sunscreen regularly.
