7 Skincare Items You Need for Mature Skin

Our skin changes over time – from oiliness and blemishes in our teens, to combination skin through our 20’s and into our 30’s, and then the dryness we experience from our late 30’s and the loss of firmness as well as dryness into our 40’s, 50’s and onwards. So you would expect our skincare needs to change as we age, and you’d be right. Gone are our teen toners and blemish controls (although – spoiler alert – these may come back), replaced with pro/anti-ageing products. Here are the 7 skincare items we think you can’t live without for mature skin.

Exfoliator

As our skin cell turnover decreases as we age, our skin starts to show signs of dullness. A good exfoliator is a must during Middle Age, to help improve the turnover of these dull skin cells. I love the multi tasking Strivectin Advanced Hydration Lactic Acid Nightly Retexturizing Serum. The vegan Lactic Acid gently exfoliates and clarifies skin while you sleep. The addition of NIA-114 helps to sooth dry skin and improve moisture. Note, as this product contains an AHA, make sure you wear sunscreen if out in the sun, as skin may have increases sun sensitivity. Strivectin Advanced Hydration Lactic Acid Nightly Retexturizing Serum 30ml RRP $122.00. Available from Adore Beauty.

Serum

A good serum is a must as we age. Serums contain smaller molecules than a moisturiser, so they can go to work deeper in the skin, for faster results. Serums come in many types, for different skin needs, from Brightening, to Fine Line and Wrinkle minimisation, and Deep Hydration. I have tried a lot (a lot) of serums, and for my drier mature skin, I absolutely love the Sukin Natural Actives Pro-Collagen Serum. Formulated to provide a much needed collagen boost to mature skin this multi-tasking Serum is enriched with Tri-Peptides, Acai Berry Extract and Vegan Squalane, to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving skin clarity and tone, whilst Kangaroo Paw Flower and Hyaluronic Acid helps to increase skin hydration. A little goes a long way, so the bottle lasts a long time. Australian made, vegan, cruelty-free and carbon offset – what’s not to love? Sukin Natural Actives Pro-Collagen Serum 25ml RRP $35.00. Available from Chemist Warehouse.

Moisturiser

It goes without saying that a good moisturiser is a must throughout our lives. It helps lock moisture into our skin, providing a barrier against moisture loss, and helps to plump skin. As our skin changes with peri and menopause, look for a moisturiser that provides benefits your skin needs in addition to hydration. Formulated for mature skin, I love the Ella Baché Eternal+ Replenishing Day Cream (part of the Ella Baché Eternal+ range). A powerful combination of olive acids, dill extracts and amino acids helps to support the rejuvenation process of mature skin and helps to stimulate it, for increased elasticity and firmness. The luxe cream helps to reveal visibly firmer, healthier looking skin and increased skin volume. Additionally, skin feels comforted and protected. Ella Baché Eternal+ Replenishing Day Cream 50ml RRP $150.00. Available from David Jones, or Ella Baché Salons.

Eye Cream

Our eyes are the window to our soul, so they say, and one of the first things people look at. The skin around our eyes also doesn’t contain any oil glands, so it is very prone to dryness, and one of the first places to start to show signs of ageing. As with your moisturiser, look for an eye cream that not only hydrates but provides benefits for the multiple eye care concerns we have as we age. I love the Olay Luminous Hyaluron + Niacinamide Eye Gel (part of the Olay Luminous Hyaluron + Niacinamide range), specially designed for the delicate layers of skin under your eyes. This divine eye cream instantly melts into skin to help hydrate under the eyes (and locking in moisture for up to 24 hours), for brighter, clearer, nourished looking skin. Olay Luminous Hyaluron + Niacinamide Eye Gel, 15ml RRP $59.99. Available from Priceline and Chemist Warehouse.

Neck & Decolletage Cream

It may seem like having a separate neck and decolletage cream is a bit of an indulgence, but unless you want to make scarves your best friend, a good neck and decolletage cream is a must. Most of us tend to ignore our necks and decolletages when we are younger, cleansing and applying moisturiser irregularly, and this really starts to show as we age with the dreaded “turkey neck” and wrinkled chest. I love the Australian-made Natio Treatments Replenishing Neck & Decolletage Cream, a lightweight, yet highly nourishing cream that uses plant peptides to help firm neck skin and boost collagen production, whilst Bearberry Extract helps to reduce the appearance of pigmentation, and even out skin tone. Natio Treatments Replenishing Neck & Decolletage Cream 100g RRP $22.95. Available from Priceline.

Sunscreen

If you live in Australia, you know a good sunscreen is a must, not only in middle age, but from toddlerhood onwards. Wearing a sunscreen whenever outdoors, yes, even over Winter, will help protect our skin from damage and melanomas in the future. To ensure your skin is protected from damage, look for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection, SPF 50+ is even better, and make sure you use enough (one teaspoon for each part of your body – face, each arm, each leg, and front and back torso), and reapply after swimming, sweating, or playing sport. Make sure the sunscreen has an AUSTL number on it – this means the therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia has tested and validated the SPF claim on the product. I love the SunButter Water Resistant Reef Safe Sunscreen SPF 50, which not only provides Broadspectrum UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) protection against the sun’s rays, with 4 hours water resistance, it is also vegan, reef-safe, palm oil free, cruelty-free, and Australian owned and made. Protecting people and our oceans – winner. SunButter Water Resistant Reef Safe Sunscreen SPF 50 100g RRP $29.95 (also available in tinted formula). Available from sunbutteroceans .

Body Lotion

It’s not only the skin on our faces that start to really dry out as we approach middle age – the skin on our bodies also takes a pounding. The same factors that play havoc with our face – loss of collagen and elastin, hormonal changes also affect our body, so a good body lotion is a must. I love the Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Body Lotion with Vitamin C, which provides moisture for up to 48 hours, and noticeably firms and improves skin elasticity in just 10 days. The highly nourishing formula is non-greasy and easily absorbed. Nivea Q10 Plus Firming Body Lotion with Vitamin C 250ml RRP $7.50/400ml RRP $11.00. Available from Coles, Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse, Priceline, and selected Metcash stores.
