Makeup to Suit your Eye Colour and Skin Tone

Have you ever tried to wear an eyeshadow or lipstick that looked so (so) good on a friend, yet it just didn’t suit you? We’ve all seen people with makeup that just seems to suit them to a T – how do they do it? The secret to makeup that looks perfect or almost so is matching the colours to your eyes and skin tone. This works with your natural colouring and gives you a look that is right for you. This 2-part piece lets you know which colour best suit your eye colour and your skin tone. Read on for more.

Eye Colour

The secret to matching eyeshadow and eyeliner to your eye colour to make them pop, is using the colour wheel.  If you haven’t heard of the colour wheel and how it works, below is a colour wheel, showing the colour spectrum:

The basic premise of the colour wheel is that complementary colours (which are opposites) contrast offset each other, to make colours pop, and neighbouring colours enhance each other, helping to highlight.  We have teamed up with Morphe x James Charles, Morphe x Jaclyn Hill and Mavala to bring you eye looks to suit different eye colours.

Green Eyes

Offset gorgeous green eyes with eyeshadow shades of maroon, purple or burgundy. These shades contrast with green eyes, making them deeper and more intense in colour. Complete the look with an eye liner in a plum or maroon shade, to really make your green eyes pop. To highlight green eyes, we love the combination of Love That and Single, and Escape and Artistry in the Morphe x James Charles Artistry palette, with the Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner in Sweet Prune. Morphe x James Charles Artistry Palette – 32 x Eyeshadows, 7 x Pressed Pigment, Palette Net Weight 75.7g RRP $59.00. Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner Pencil 1.2g RRP $14.95.

Blue Eyes

Bring out the alluring blue in your eyes with neutral, earthy tones – think soft browns, shimmery metallics (coppers, bronzes and golds), greys and soft rosy shades. The blue intensity of your eyes will come to the fore when finished with an eyeliner in an earthy/copper tone. For blue eyes, we love the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Volume I Butter and Pooter and Sissy and Queen, and the Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner in Warm Brown. Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Volume I – 35 x Eyeshadows, Palette Net Weight 56.2g RRP $59.00. Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner Pencil 1.2g RRP $14.95.

Brown Eyes

The natural intensity of brown eyes means you can wear some deep colours and metallics – blues, plums, metallic coppers and bronze all suit brown eyes. Create a dramatic look with a rich azure blue eyeshadow, and a deep or an electric blue eyeliner. To make blue eyes pop, we love the combination of Twerk and Royalty shades in the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Volume I and Brother and Cola shades in the Morphe x James Charles Palette, combined with the Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner in Navy Blue. Morphe x James Charles Artistry Palette – 32 x Eyeshadows, 7 x Pressed Pigment, Palette Net Weight 75.7g RRP $59.00. Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Volume I – 35 x Eyeshadows, Palette Net Weight 56.2g RRP $59.00. Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner Pencil 1.2g RRP $14.95.

Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes can often get a little lost (I should know – I have them). Highlight the gold and brown intensity in hazel eyes with greens, olives and shimmering coppers and bronze. Complete the look with a khaki, green, or soft gold eye liner. To intensify haze eyes, we love the combination of Diva and Hustle shades in the Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Volume I, and Guac and Daddy in the Morphe x James Charles Palette, combined with the Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner in Velvet Green. Morphe x Jaclyn Hill Palette Volume I – 35 x Eyeshadows, Palette Net Weight 56.2g RRP $59.00. Morphe x James Charles Artistry Palette – 32 x Eyeshadows, 7 x Pressed Pigment, Palette Net Weight 75.7g RRP $59.00. Mavala Khol Soft Eyeliner Pencil 1.2g RRP $14.95.

Skin Tone

The secret to finding face makeup (foundation, blush and lipstick) to match your skin is skin tone (fair/light, medium, and dark), and your undertone – ie determining if you have warm, cool or neutral undertones. Determining your sin tone is relatively simple – do you have pale skin that burns easily? If so, you have a fair or light skin tone. Medium skin tones are generally a little darker, and don’t burn as easily, whilst dark tones are as the name suggests dark in colour and burn very little. To determine your undertone, tun your wrist to the underside. Are your veins predominantly blueish to purple? If so, you have cool undertones and should look for blue undertones in your makeup colours. Do your veins appear more towards green? Then you have warm undertones and should look for yellow undertones in your makeup colours. If they are neither blue or green, you may have neutral undertones (in which case you can wear more colours – lucky you). We have again teamed up with Mavala and Morphe to bring you face makeup to suit different skin tones.

Fair Skin

Fair skins need subtler colours in their make up, so their delicate skin tone is not overpowered. Subtle doesn’t need to mean boring though – think soft pinks, or rose beiges. Coming into Spring and Summer, we love the decadent, candy-like beige in Mavala Beige Crumble Lipstick, with its moisturising ProLip formula (part of the Mavala Summer Crush Collection), paired with a hint of the pink Free Blush in the Morphe 8F Fair Play Face Palette. Mavala Beige Crumble Lipstick 4g RRP $27.95. Morphe 8F Fair Play Face Palette – 1 x Brightener, 3 x Bronzer,1 x Contour, 2 x Blush, 2 x Highlighter, Palette Net Weight 28g RRP $36.00.

Medium Skin

Medium skin can afford to wear colours with a bit more intensity, to avoid looking too washed out. Colours like rich corals, dusty rose pinks, shimmering bronzes and soft reds suit medium skin tones. For Spring/Summer, we love the zesty freshness and boldness of Mavala Apricot Crisp (also part of the Summer Crush Collection), paired with a mix the Summery Creator and Peppy Blushs in the Morphe 8M Medium Vibes Face Palette. Mavala Apricot Crisp Lipstick 4g RRP $27.95. Morphe 8M Medium Vibes Face Palette – 1 x Brightener, 3 x Bronzer, 1 x Contour, 2 x Blush, 2 x Highlighter, Palette Net Weight 28g RRP $36.00.

Tan Skin

The soft brown and olive shades of Tan skin can wear bolder colours year round, as softer, lighter colours can disappear against your skin tone. Colours like Fuchsia, Candy Pink, Purple, Russet and Copper all look good with tan skin tones. For Spring Summer, we love the sweetness of the rosy pink Mavala Rose Candy (again, part of the Summer Crush Collection), paired with the luminous Spunky Blush in the Morphe 8T Totally Tan Palette, with a hint of the Peppy blush from the Morphe 8M Medium Vibes Palette featured above. Mavala Rose Candy Lipstick 4g RRP $27.95. Morphe 8T Totally Tan Face Palette – 1 x Brightener, 3 x Bronzer, 1 x Contour, 2 x Blush, 2 x Highlighter, Palette Net Weight 28g RRP $36.00.

Dark Skin

Dark skin can wear the boldest colours of all, to make lips and cheeks stand out against your skin. Think deep plums, cherry reds, lilac, and deep brown, which all suit darker skin tones. This Spring and Summer, we love the sparkling, decadent red in Mavala Cherry Crush for Lips, which also looks good mixed with the deep chocolate brown of Mavala Brown Sugar (both are, you guessed it – part of the Summer Crush Collection), paired with the soft red Fiery Blush in the Morphe 8D Deep Glam Face Palette. Mavala Cherry Crush Lipstick 4g RRP $27.95. Mavala Brown Sugar Lipstick 4g RRP $27.95. Morphe 8D Deep Glam Face Palette – 1 x Brightener, 3 x Bronzer, 1 x Contour, 2 x Blush, 2 x Highlighter, Palette Net Weight 28g RRP $36.00.

We hope this has helped you to find the perfect colour to suit your eye colour and skin tone. Now that you know which shades work, feel free to mix it up and see which different shades and tones suit you best. Find a makeup palette (we love the ones featured above – they are so versatile – so many different looks in each palette), some lipstick shades (again, we love the Mavala Crush Collection with their caring formulas), eyeliner, mascara, and start experimenting – it’s part of the fun of finding a new look.
